Maureen E. McCarthy is a mother and grandmother. She received her Master of Arts degree from DePaul University, in Holistic Human Development, Parenting Education and Counseling. She has many years of experience in counseling and in education. She is passionate about advocating for babies and their emotional and relationship needs, and about providing support and good research-based information to parents. Her organization, Parenting for a Caring World, uses the term CARE Parenting for the kind of parenting described in this article. The acronym “CARE” stands for “Conscious, Attuned, Responsive and Empathetic.” In addition to sharing the science that supports this kind of parenting, she uses the power of music to touch hearts and promote empathy for babies. She wrote a song from the perspective of a baby left alone to cry uncomforted, entitled “All I Want is You.” (Available on Amazon and elsewhere.) Ms. McCarthy is working on a booklet entitled “A User-Friendly Guide to Positive Discipline” and a document entitled “Hollywood and Babies: How scriptwriters, producers and other change agents can revolutionize infant-rearing and thus contribute to preventing addictions, violence, corporate sociopathy and other scourges.” She welcomes collaborators as well as patrons of the work she does through Parenting for a Caring World.
